About Me

My family are incredibly important to me. They are originally from the north-west region of India and moved to Glasgow when I was three years old. I’ve lived in the city ever since and I’m proud to call myself Scottish. My Sikhism has taught me to live my life to the maximum and made me a firm believer in equality. I believe that it is our duty as individuals to stand up to those that hold prejudice or are intolerant of others.

After secondary school I enrolled in a course at Langside College .  Having done nearly half my course, I was faced with a large bill for tuition fees and not enough money to foot the bill.  With no students’ association to turn to for help, and no money available to pay the fees, I was forced to leave the college and find a job. The injustice I felt has remained with me since this time, and it is this injustice that motivated me to work hard for a better deal for students as President of the University of Strathclyde Students’ Association.

My student experience at Strathclyde was shaped by the student union – I volunteered with the RAG group, worked on the NSLP training team, was a member of the student council and a non-sabbatical officer. I owe a lot to the union at Strathclyde and to the national student movement. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunities I’ve worked for, and this is one of the driving forces for my commitment to the student movement. I want everyone to have access to these opportunities.

I studied Politics as my degree and in my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and being around my friends. I love cooking for friends, especially experimenting with food from different cultures. I also enjoy all the regular stuff; books, films, and catching up with the latest news.

What you can expect of me

Five pledges as your candidate for NUS Scotland President

- Dedication and experience – My aims for NUS Scotland are ambitious, but with some hard work I know we can achieve a lot. My track record is one of commitment and dedication, and my experience will ensure that I deliver.

- Putting Students First – My campaign slogan is 'Students First' because I passionately believe that the NUS Scotland President is there to serve the interest of our members, and not any one political faction.

I am the independent candidate in this election. I am running on the back of my record of campaigning and winning, and you can trust that I will always listen to the needs and demands of all our students, and then act on them. In short, I will always put students first.

- My Politics – I’m not a member of any political party or any political faction. I never have been and have no plans to join one anytime soon. That doesn’t mean I don’t have political values, but It does mean that I’m non-partisan, and my values are my own.

I believe fundamentally in equality, human rights, environmentalism and social justice.

- Standing up for Scotland – The NUS Scotland President represents Scotland on the NEC. I will always make sure that I do what is right for Scotland. If you elect me President I can promise you NUS Scotland won’t be directed by London, and my priorities will be your priorities.

- A new NUS Scotland – Whilst the student movement is often busy fighting old problems, I willbring fresh new ideas to our campaigns. My manifesto lays out how I will dramatically improve NUS Scotland to make it a modern proactive campaigning organisation fit for the 21st century.

My election website has been designed with accessibility in mind. It has been checked by and meets the standards set by the NUS disabled students committee.
