Further Education - Introduction

I know what it is to be a student at college. It was my experience of being forced out of FE due to tuition fees that made me want to create a better student experience for everyone. In fact this is the main reason why I'm running to be your NUS Scotland President. That's why I can assure you, if I'm elected, I won't stop until every FE college is represented in NUS and every student has a voice.

Further Education students make up the majority of the membership of our National Union, but you wouldn't think it when you look at NUS' outdated structures. Recently things have been getting better as NUS Scotland looks for ways to enhance support for FE unions, but we need a fresh perspective and a new approach to tackle the challenges we face.

I'm the only candidate in this election who has experience of FE. I know how frustrating it can be to have candidates make token gestures without understanding the real issues on the ground. So, above all else my number one pledge to you is simply this: I promise I won't patronise you by telling you what you know best, and I promise I'll put FE issues at the heart of NUS Scotland's agenda, in parity with HE.

I've shown my dedication to both FE and HE throughout my involvement in the student movement. As a member of the Scottish Government's FE/HE roundtable, I've been working hard to bring the issues between HE and FE together. As President of Strathclyde Students' Association I successfully lobbied my University to build a new £40 million sports centre and made sure that it was open to local FE students.

I believe in a strong student movement, one with Further education unions and students at its heart. I know you do too.

My election website has been designed with accessibility in mind. It has been checked by and meets the standards set by the NUS disabled students committee.
