Our Services - Introduction

A good education is not just about sitting in class and getting a formal qualification at the end of it.

For many, going to college or university is an experience that shapes their lives in many more ways; making life-long friends, learning new skills and taking part in new activities.

That’s why strong commercial services are important to the students we represent; because they provide the facilities for a broader student experience.

For students’ associations too, commercial services are vital, Strong commercial services can help support our associations’ core activities, from welfare to volunteering, from societies to participation in union democracy.

Yet, the environment for our commercial services is changing. No longer can we just expect students to fill our bars or buy from our shops. Increased competition and student hardship mean that students are always looking for the best deal and unfortunately that doesn’t always mean association-run services.

So we must ensure that commercial services; whether association-run or institution-run, are providing what students want. Our commercial services need to be modern, accessible, diverse and on a par with any high street chains. Whether it’s just a student shop or a large venue, we need to be student focused to stay ahead of the market.

I believe it’s NUS Scotland’s role to support us in all aspects of our associations and that includes our services. Much more can be done to share good practice from our largest to our smallest unions. This must happen now, while student services remain viable.
